Field Note case study. Ten months closed by road construction, then 30% sales growth year over year in the first month back.

Road construction shut a local coffee shop down for ten months. Customers couldn't get to the door, so the doors closed. By the time the road reopened, the old team had moved on, and the old way of doing things had gone with them.

I came on board to help bring it back, and we rebuilt it from the ground up. We hired a whole new team and gave every person real training from day one, with onboarding they could start online before their first shift. We built new recipes and wrote down how every shift runs, so a great drink doesn't depend on who's working. We also set up simple sales tools that help each visit turn into the next one.

It didn't go smoothly, and I'd be lying if I said it did. People we hired never showed up, and others started and quit within days. Equipment broke at the worst possible moments. After a few decades of owning businesses, I've learned you can't stop those surprises from coming. What you can do is expect them and stay calm and capable when they hit, so the shop keeps moving while you fix what broke.

In the first month back open, sales were up 30% over the same month a year earlier. It's early, and the next phase is bringing customers back through the door with local marketing partnerships and real community involvement, especially for the regulars who found somewhere else to go while the road was closed. But one lesson is already clear: a shutdown takes a lot away, and it also hands you a clean slate to build the systems most owners never get around to.

You don't need ten months closed to rebuild how your business runs. That's where every Freedom Blueprint starts.
